Las orquídeas constituyen una familia de plantas diversa y altamente evolucionada que destacan por la complejidad de sus flores, por su complicada interacción con agentes polinizadores, generalmente insectos y por formar micorrizas con hongos. En este

Orchis en griego significa testículo, y el nombre de estas plantas hace referencia a sus tubérculos enterrados, muy similares a los testículos de los mamíferos.

Entre las orquídeas silvestres que habitan en Gaztelumendi es relativamente sencillo encontrar las tres especies que se presentan en las fotografías.
La más abundante de todas es Orchis mascula o "Satiricón" o "Orquídea macho", inconfundible por sus hojas maculadas o manchadas.

| Anacamptis palustris |
Aunque algo menos abundante que la anterior, la Dactylorhiza macuculata, o "Orquídea moteada de los pantanos", se puede encontrar fácilmente en praderas a cielo abierto. Tiene también hojas maculadas, pero las flores tienden al color blanco.
Por último la Anacamptis palustris, o "Orquídea palustre" es una bella, grácil, rara y muy escasa orquídea, catalogada como vulnerable, que vive en praderas inundables.

No es difícil localizar estas plantas, sólo hay que pasear el campo, despacio, con mimo, sin prisa, caminar lento, suave pero atento, abandonar el camino marcado, observar, oír, dejarse llevar por los olores, los colores y los ruidos de la naturaleza..... la recompensa es un inesperado regalo sin contrapartidas envenenadas.
